Birmingham City Women may have returned from Manchester empty-handed on Sunday afternoon, but there was plenty for Blues supporters to be encouraged about as Amy Merricks’ side battled hard against the reigning Women’s Super League champions.
Facing the daunting challenge of an away trip to last season’s title winners Manchester City on the opening weekend of the campaign, Birmingham showed resilience, determination and plenty of promise before eventually succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at the Joie Stadium.
The final score perhaps does not fully reflect the effort and commitment shown by the visitors, who frustrated City for long periods and were rewarded for their persistence with a late goal from Océane Hurtré.
Baggaley Stands Tall
If there was one player who epitomised Birmingham’s fighting spirit, it was goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley. The Blues shot-stopper produced a magnificent first-half display, making a series of outstanding saves to deny City’s star-studded attack.
With Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Mary Fowler all asking questions of the Birmingham defence, Baggaley repeatedly came to her side’s rescue. Her reflexes, positioning and bravery kept the champions at bay and ensured the teams went into halftime level despite sustained pressure from the home side.
The defence in front of her also deserves significant praise. Captain Maya Turner marshalled the back line well while the entire team worked tirelessly to limit City’s opportunities. Against one of the most potent attacking sides in the division, Birmingham demonstrated the organisation and discipline that will be crucial throughout the season.
Champions Find Their Quality
The breakthrough eventually arrived shortly after the restart when Mary Fowler capitalised on a loose ball to give City the lead. Just six minutes later, Khadija Shaw doubled the advantage with a header from a corner as the champions began to show the clinical edge that helped them secure last season’s title.
Even at 2-0 down, however, Birmingham never allowed heads to drop. The Blues continued to compete and looked to create chances whenever opportunities arose, refusing to allow the contest to become one-sided despite City’s dominance of possession.
Shaw added a third goal late on with another well-taken header, but the scoreline never told the full story of Birmingham’s endeavour throughout the afternoon.
Hurtré Provides a Moment to Celebrate
The travelling Blues supporters were rewarded for their unwavering backing in the closing moments when Océane Hurtré capitalised on a defensive error to score Birmingham’s first Women’s Super League goal of the season.
It was a deserved reward for a side that had continued battling until the final whistle and provided a positive moment to take away from an otherwise difficult afternoon against elite opposition.
Plenty of Positives
While no one at Birmingham will be satisfied with defeat, there were plenty of encouraging signs from the performance.
The organisation shown in the first half, the heroics of Baggaley, the commitment of the entire squad and the refusal to give up when facing one of the league’s strongest teams all suggest that Birmingham are more than capable of competing at this level.
The result may go down as an opening-day loss, but the manner of the performance should give supporters confidence. The Blues stood toe-to-toe with the defending champions for long periods and demonstrated the fighting spirit that supporters expect to see throughout the campaign.
There will undoubtedly be sterner tests ahead and opportunities to collect points against teams around them in the table. If Birmingham can bring the same work ethic, resilience and determination shown in Manchester, there is every reason to believe brighter afternoons lie ahead this season.
